After listening to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album, I immediately connected with the song, ‘Bodyguard’. I adore the simplicity of the chords structure, the melody and how Beyoncé’s voice sounds so smooth and sexy. Most of all I love the count in that she does at the beginning of the song.
“One, Two, Three, Four!”
It made me pause and think,
“Imagine if Beyoncé was counting for you like a motivational dance/aerobics instructor?”
How awesome would that be?! You wouldn’t give up, you’d keep going!
That’s when I knew I had to turn the song on its head and into an uplifting motivational track and one that get’s us in the mood for summer!
Jenifer Lewis
So to take the song to the next level, I took one of my all time favourite quotes from the iconic Jenifer Lewis where she details her morning ritual. It ends with her telling herself that she is a “Pretty Bitch”! I love this quote so much! I certainly can do with reminding myself sometimes that I’m a Pretty Bitch!! It immediately lifts my spirits and makes me believe I can face anything!
It’s funny because I always knew I would someday use this quote in a musical project, I just didn’t realise it would be my very first mashup and it works so well!
Kool & The Gang
‘Fresh’ is definitely one of my favourtie songs from Kool & The Gang. It’s a classic and super fun to dance to!
Not only does the instrumental which fit so well with Beyoncé’s melody, I was also able to sample James “J.T” Taylor’s vocals as he sings, “Pretty as can be”, which instantly supports the “Pretty B!tch” theme!
